Docúpolis consolidates as the reference documentary’s festival of southern Europe

The seventh edition of the International Documentary Festival of Barcelona – Docúpolis has registered an unprecedent figure of original films (1.200) from 68 countries of the five continents.
Most of the documentaries that participate in the different categories come from various european countries.


More than 600 over the 1.200 documentaries are european, thereof Poland (22 documentaries) and Croatia (11 documentaries) surprised with their remarkable participation, in addition to the massive inscription of projects coming from Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. In Eastern Europe the festival called attention to various countries like Albany, Bulgaria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latonia, Poland, Russia, Rumania and Ukraine.

From the whole American continent competed 16 countries, in particular works from Argentina, Chile, Canada, Colombia, Mexico and the USA. South America also sent a high number of projects with a total figure of 143.

Not less important was the Asiatic presence for the competition at the seventh edition of Docúpolis. From nine Asiatic countries arrived 55 documentaries, specially a high number of works is coming from Israel (26). Iran and India have sent ten projects each one, we also registered the presence of films from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates.

The African continent showed a high variety in reference to its countries of origin. Furthermore projects from South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria or Tunisia are inscribed in the different sections of the festival.

Lastly, Oceania has registered eight documentaries from Australia and New Zealand.

Variety of prizes

The International Documentary Festival of Barcelona awards the Docúpolis Prize of 6.000 euros reward to the best documentary, the Gran Angular Prize to the best short documentary of 3.000 euros, and the Best Opera Prima Prize, which contains the distribution of the documentary by Ermedia distributor.
The categories of the honorific prizes are Tercer Ojo Prize to the best experimental documentary, Human Rights Prize, Best South American Documentary Prize, and the Public’s Prize. The inscription term was closed on 15th of June.

The organization appreciates the progression of Docúpolis, not only for the high participation and for the geographical variety, but also for the increasing popularity generated by the former continuity of each edition of Docúpolis. Probably the quality of the program and the get-together of documentary cineastes from all over the world contributed to this progressive consolidation of the Festival.
