CARMEN GUARINI
Graduated in Anthropology at the University of Buenos Aires in 1980. In 1988 she obtained a PhD of the 3ème cycle in Etudes Theatrales et Cinématographiques. Specialisation: Cinéma Anthropologique – Paris I- Sorbonne and Paris X-Nanterre (France), she wrote her doctoral thesis under the supervision of Jean Rouch. Additionally she received two Diplomes d’Etudes Approfondies - D.E.A. in Anthropologie Sociale et Culturelle – from the UniversityParis-V Sorbonne (France) (1981) and a D.E.A. in Etudes Theatrales et Cinématographiques (Specialisation: Cinéma Anthropologique)at Paris I-Sorbonne/Paris X-Nanterre (1982).
Since 1992 she is an Investigator at the National Board for Scientific and Technical Investigations in her country. She established and coordinates since this year the Visual Anthropology Programme at the Anthropological Scientific Institute of the University of Buenos Aires. Since 1984 she also works as a professor at this same university. She lectured and still gives numerous courses on Documentary Film at several different institutes, such as; the Foundation Universidad de Cine, TEA Photo Journalism, EICTV Cuba and at different universities around the country. She also was invited as a guest lecturer at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, where she coordinated the graduate thesis´ in her specialty: Documentary Film and Visual Anthropology.
In 1988 she founded and since then co-directed de documentary production company CINE OJO ( pioneer in Argentina) with the objective to produce, distribute and promote documentary film.
In the year 2001 she was nominated by the Konex Foundation of Argentina as one of the best documentary film makers of the country due to her work in the last ten years.
Guarini received funding and subsidies from, among others; the Canadian Government, the National foundation of Arts, the National Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute, Soros Documentary Foundation, the Jan Vrijman Fund. She participated as a jury member in several International Film Festivals like; Friborg (Switzerland), Lisbon (Portugal), Havana (Cuba), Trieste (Italy), E Tudo Verdade, Bahia (Brazil), Documenta Madrid, Spain and in several National Festivals.
She wrote various articles on her specialty: Visual Anthropology and Documentary Film, and she participated in numerous conferences and round tables concerning both themes.
Guarini directed and co-directed numerous feature length documentaries, all commercially released in Argentina and distributed internationally both at various international film festivals and retrospective programmes of the CINE OJO company (In Spain, Portugal, Italy and France.) Next to this she directed a great amount of shorts and videos.
