In the competitive section, 38 works - chosen from the 800 documentaries from every continent - will show the best of the contemporary documentary genre. There is a great variety of subjects and forms, something that illustrates the vitality of the genre on an international level. This edition’s competition lets us observe the plurality of aesthetic proposals and the firm critical vision of the social reality as two of the main characteristics of the contemporary documentary.

This section, integrated into the projection of more than 100 documentaries during the whole Docúpolis festival, will turn Barcelona, from 4 to 8 October, into the meeting point to enjoy the best contemporary documentary films.

The contest is divided into three competitive sections with an economic endowment, consisting of 12 films each. The best documentary is awarded with the Docúpolis Award with an endowment of 6000 euros. The Gran Angular Award is granted by the channel 2 TV program Gran Angular, and consists of 3000 euros plus the broadcasting of the winning short film. The Best First Work Award is given out in collaboration with the distribution company Ermedia, that will take care of the international distribution of the winning documentary.

Docúpolis 2006 also gives out Honorific Awards that are dedicated to concrete aspects of the projected documentaries in the whole festival. The Human Rights Award is dedicated to the most committed documentary concerning this subject. The Best South American Documentary Award goes to a South American production, but it is also a recognition for the contribution of this continent regarding the contemporary documentary production. The Tercer Ojo Award will recognize the film with the most experimental consciousness. This year, the Men of the Camera Award is dedicated to the essential work of the Dutch documentary film maker: Joris Ivens.
