THE COLUMBIAN DOCUMENTARY FILM-MAKERS MARTA RODRÍGUEZ AND FERNANDO RESTREPO EXPOUND THE KEYS OF THE COLUMBIAN “CONFLICT” IN FRONT OF THE AUDIENCE OF DOCÚPOLIS’05

Yesterday the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona (CCCB) welcomed the documentarists Marta Rodríguez and Fernando Restrepo for a debate dealing with the question how to document a reality that doesn’t let itself being filmed.

Marta Rodríguez started to work with documentaries more than 35 years ago together with master of the cine-vérité. However, it has been the everlasting violence in which the country of her birth, Columbia, that has nourished her career as a documentalist. Marta Rodríguez and Fernando Restrepo (with whom she was working for 7 years), have closely and continuously followed the process of the displacement of the indigenes of the “zone del Choco” (Colombia), by the paramilitary. The fight in which the cinema of Marta Rodríguez and Fernando Restrepo roots, does, according to them, not have another focus than the “work for love and justice”. Their denunciation is directed at the paramilitary as well as at the guerrilla, and all of those, that bring a reality of terror and massacre to the indigene communities. Marta Rodríguez repeated, that the resistance is not made by arms and Fernando Restrepo added that the “the light constructs”, that the hope, the survival of the cultures and their memories need a medium of expression.
